Forgotten Birds

We are nothing to our children,

old and useless,

used up by them -- by their youth,

edged aside by society,

of no worth even to ourselves,

we are birds

- - hearts and minds still soaring - -

wing-battered

on the rocks and sands of the day,

and all would prefer

if we'd just go away.
